A Prayer for Times of Fasting

A Prayer for Times of Fasting

“Fasting helps to express, to deepen, and to confirm the resolution that we are ready to sacrifice anything, even ourselves, to attain the kingdom of God. And Jesus, who Himself fasted and sacrificed, will value, accept, and reward with spiritual power the soul that is thus ready to give up everything to Him and His kingdom.” Andrew Murray

As we enter into days of harvest, it is important to understand that fasting intensifies prayer and its effectiveness. God is calling many of us to enter into fasting in a much deeper way. As we move onward with the Lord and as we prepare for revival, fasting is the impetus to launch each of us into greater fruitfulness and success in prayer.

The challenges of the end times are going to require our focus on this great discipline to bring breakthrough and blessing. Everywhere we turn there is the need for travailing prayer. The coronavirus crisis, shortages of food, and other disasters are indications that we need to fast and pray for the salvation and healing of multitudes living throughout the world. Fasting and prayer is one of the quickest ways to prepare us for the future.

There has been a dramatic increase in fasting since the beginning of 2020. Presently there are an increasing number of Christians who are fasting for up to forty days. In preparation for the great end-time revival, God’s people need to prepare through prayer and fasting. Fasting refines prayer and positions us in heart and in every other way for revival. God wants to set our hearts on fire with His purposes and plans. The following prayer will help you and your prayer groups to fast and pray.

A Prayer for Times of Fasting

Lord, I pray that You would develop my prayer and fasting lifestyle. Help me to fast with others and to fast alone. I thank You that fasting refines my prayer life. It intensifies my prayers and its’ effectiveness. The challenges of the end times are going to require me to focus on this great discipline to bring breakthrough and blessing into life situations. It’s one of the quickest ways for me to prepare for the future. I ask that You would give me the right heart as I fast. I want to fast the right way with the right heart motives. Give me a humble and obedient heart. I don’t want it to be just an outward act of religious obedience. I don’t want it to cause pride in my life. I thank You for the 18 benefits of fasting in Isaiah 58:6-14 [Pray through these 18 benefits of fasting in these verses, and thank God for each one of them. For example, I thank you that my light will break forth like the dawn and my healing will quickly appear. Thank you that the glory of the Lord will be my rear guard and You will answer me, etc.]. Teach us to fast and pray. The hour is urgent, and I long for power from on high to overcome the darkness that is invading the earth. I believe in the power of fasting and prayer. I want to draw closer to your throne, I long to move higher in our commitment to your purposes, and I desire to bring heaven’s plans down to earth through my fasting and prayer.

I ask that You would guide me when I should fast and what kind I should do. There are so many ways that I can fast, but I need Your direction every time. I want to develop a lifestyle of fasting to increase my spiritual power over darkness. I don’t want to touch Your glory, but whenever You use me, I want to give You all the praise and glory. I thank You that fasting humbles and chastens my soul (Psalm 35:13). It brings my body into subjection so that I don’t run aimlessly (1 Corinthians 9:26-27, Galatians 5:17). It breaks down the barriers in my carnal nature that stands in the way of Your Spirit’s power in my life (Ephesians 3:20). Fasting is a sacrifice of my personal will (Psalm 51:17) and a time of self-examination (Psalm 139:23-24). I thank You that it leads to brokenness and repentance in my life (Acts 17:30b), and unclutters my spirit so You can focus on my heart (Psalm 51:16-17). Fasting causes me to face myself without the normal escape routes, and it brings me into a deeper relationship with You (Psalm 42:1- 2a). Lord, I thank You for all that fasting does in my life because You will always use the broken and the humble (Galatians 2:20). You resist the proud but give grace to the humble (James 4:6, 1 Peter 5:5). You want to break the carnal nature of selfishness in my life and have Your overflowing life released through me unhindered. Thank You for being my example and humbling Yourself unto death for me (Philippians 2). Thank You for Your example of fasting for forty days and nights. As I fast and pray, You will empower me to live a resurrected life (Psalm 51:17).

During times of fasting, lead me into how I should pray, and help me to pray for things that are on Your heart. I pray for spiritual breakthroughs in the worldwide Church with unprecedented unity and power (John 14:12; 17:2-23). I pray for the release of grace for fasting with worship and prayer to establish Houses of Prayer in the cities of the earth, including Israel (Isaiah 62:6–7). I ask You for the release of finances for the great harvest, the prayer movement, and the poor (Haggai 2:7–9). I pray that over one billion souls are converted by the power of God (Matthew 24:14). I ask for worldwide revival especially among the youth and the poor of the earth (Malachi 4:6). I pray for the fulfillment of all the prophetic promises to national Israel (Romans 9-11), and I ask for divine protection over all that is birthed through prayer (Zechariah 2:5). Bring me into a place of deeper intimacy with You as I pray for what is on Your heart. I want to help prepare the earth for the final harvest and Your second coming. Open my eyes to see the greatness of this holy discipline of fasting, give me hunger for your presence, and I ask for grace to be able to seek you. I want to grow as a prayer warrior who knows how to fast and pray. Show me the way forward, and give me great faith to believe for great things. In Jesus’ name, amen.
